Chapter Twelve
I had looked forward to meeting my Elf mother since I learned of her existence. Now that she was standing in front of me, I had absolutely no clue what to say. I moved to slide off of Chett's back and found Shaw's strong arms assisting me down. Thankful for the help, I tried to catch his eye to offer him a grateful smile, but he avoided my stare. He kept his attention directed toward the king. I leaned the majority of my weight on him as I tested my ankle. It was already feeling better. Once I was safely on the ground, Shaw stepped in front of the king and dipped his head.
"Welcome home, Shaw," King Tornus exclaimed as he embraced Shaw.
"It is good to have you back, Shaw." Prince Jonus shook Shaw's hand once King Tornus released Shaw from his embrace.
The perfect smile never left the prince's face, but never quite reached his eyes. I stared at the prince for a long moment, taking in his beauty. With Jonus' model-like good looks and Shaw's ruggedly handsome features, it was definitely a horserace between the two on who was more attractive. Of course, I was biased. No one could compare with Shaw. But, standing there with the two of them made me feel incredibly plain.
After releasing Prince Jonus from a quick hug, Shaw turned to my mother. He looked at her with a kind smile and kissed her gently on the cheek.
"Queen Lorna," he said, bowing his head. Then he took her by the hand and walked her toward me. "I have done what you asked of me. This is your daughter, Christina, and she is safe."
All eyes were on me now. I wasn't sure what to do. What was I suppose to say to the mother I never even knew I had? Her emerald eyes twinkled, and her smile was so warm and so welcoming. She glanced back at Shaw, then turned to me and placed a hand on my cheek.
"My daughter," she said softly as her eyes welled up with tears. "You have my Davis' eyes. How very wonderful." She paused, smiling at me as the tears spilled down her perfect cheeks. "I am so sorry that I was not with you while you were young. I am just so happy that you are alive." She wrapped me up in a loving hug and then she grabbed Shaw and attempted to hug both of us at the same time. "I am so happy that both of you are alive."
When she finally pulled away, I felt a little bewildered. I still didn't know what I should say. I looked at Shaw for help, but I was actually saved the trouble of finding words by Prince Jonus.
"So, this is your daughter and the Savior of Meric."
He walked to us, his gaze scanning me from head to toe. He was wearing a pleasant smile, his eyes said otherwise. Jonus' smile twisted into a smirk for just a fraction of a second as his eyes flashed to Shaw.
